Bishop issues statement on murder near church

The Most Rev. George V. Murry, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, has issued a statement about the fatal shooting of Angeline Fimognari, 80, who was killed after attending the 8 a.m. Mass Saturday at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave. It is believed the victim was shot at about 8:45 a.m. in her car in the parking lot. It is believed she was the last person to leave the church after Mass.

Statement by Bishop V. Murry:

The homicide at St. Dominic Parish on Saturday, January 23, is a horrific and shocking event in and of itself, but especially because it occurred at a holy place.

The clergy and staff at St. Dominic Parish are working with the police to bring the perpetrator to justice and also to bring peace and healing to the victim’s family.

During this difficult time, it is important to remember that we must not only work together as a community to solve this crime but also to help people in need so that they will not turn to violence.

St. Dominic Parish is taking the necessary steps to insure security for all those who worship there and St. Dominic’s pastor, Father Gregory Maturi, and I encourage parishioners to continue attending the parish.

I will celebrate the 8:00 a.m. Mass Wednesday, the Mass that Miss Fimognari usually attended, to be with the parishioners who were her friends and family so that as a community we may all pray for her.

I ask that the faithful of St. Dominic Parish and indeed all members of the Diocese of Youngstown as well as all people of good will pray for Angeline Fimognari and her family. May she rest forever in the peace of the Lord.
