WINTEr PET CARE Tips

Area veterinarians and animal-welfare officials offer tips for protecting pets from the elements:

Make sure the pet has adequate shelter, including a roof and walls to protect it from the wind.

Provide bedding so the animal can keep warm.

Ensure the pet has water and that it doesn’t freeze.

Shorten the amount of time an animal is outside during subfreezing temperatures. Larger dogs and dogs with thicker coats can better tolerate the cold than smaller, light-coated animals.

Wipe a dog’s feet after they’ve been outside to get rid of road salt and other chemicals.
