Fitch wrestlers seventh at Hephner

The Austintown Fitch Blue wrestling team finished seventh at the Josh Hephner Memorial wrestling tournament it hosted Jan. 22-23. The 17th annual event honors the former Fitch wrestler who died in a car accident in July 1993.

Medina won the team title with 323 team points, while Louisville (255.5) and Lake (235) rounded out the top three.

Fitch’s Shawn Ague fell 8-6 in the finals to finish as the tournament runner-up at 112 pounds. R.J. Balog lost 5-3 in overtime to take fourth place at 160 pounds. Andy Koch also placed for the Falcons, finishing fourth at 189 pounds.

Sarah Guerrier made history by becoming the first female to ever advance to the championship round of the Hephner tournament. Wrestling at 103 pounds, she pinned three opponents in the prelims and went on to finish eighth in the weight class.

Player of the Week

Austintown’s Kortney Kin, a Wilmington College senior, was named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 18. Kin, a member of the women’s basketball team, ranks second in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game this season. A 2009 All-American, Kin is ranked No. 8 on Wilmington’s all-time scoring list, with 1,342 career points.

Fitch girls bowlers win

The Fitch girls bowling team claimed another Federal League victory by defeating North Canton Hoover, 2,568 to 2,346. Top performers for the Falcons were Delorean Jones with a team-high 229 game and 447 series and Gina Cheff, who rolled at 246 and a 406 series. Marietta Gallo added a 202 game and Victoria Phelps also broke the 200 barrier with a 201 effort.
