STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Verdell Jones III hit two late long jumpers, Devan Dumes scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and Indiana held off Penn State 67-61 on Thursday night for its first road win of the season.

The Hoosiers (9-9, 3-3 Big Ten) led by nine with 6:20 left but couldn’t shake Penn State and guard Talor Battle, who had a game-high 22 despite being hobbled by a left ankle twisted earlier in the week.

Andrew Ott’s layup got Penn State (8-10, 0-6) within three, but Jones nailed a 3 with a defender in his face to get the lead back to 63-57 with 2:58 left, and another jumper more than a minute later to put the Hoosiers up eight.

CHICAGO — Willie Veasley’s free throw with 34 seconds left gave Butler the lead and the Bulldogs survived a last-second shot and tip attempt.

Veasley hit the second of two free throws to break a 47-47 tie. After the teams traded turnovers, Loyola had one last chance with 5.9 seconds to go. But Terrance Hill’s 3-point attempt went in and out and Jordan Hicks couldn’t convert a tip-in as the buzzer sounded.

Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayward scored 12 points each for cold-shooting Butler (15-4, 8-0 Horizon), which won its seventh straight game.

Valparaiso 64, Illinois-Chicago 58

CHICAGO — Brandon Wood scored 16 points to lead four teammates in double figures for Valparaiso.

Howard Little scored 14 points, Michael Rogers 11 and Brandon McPherson 10 for the Crusaders (9-11, 4-4 Horizon). Cory Johnson had nine points and 12 rebounds for Valparaiso, which shot just 32 percent from the field.
