Council thanks Tieche for years of serviceSFlb

In the 18 years he served Canfield, longtime City Manager Charles Tieche attended 432 city council meetings.

That’s according to calculations by Mayor William Kay, who thanked Tieche for his service during Wednesday’s council meeting, Tieche’s last in an official capacity.

“Nobody has put his heart and soul into the city more than Chuck Tieche,” Kay said, explaining that Tieche has earned the respect and admiration of officials and residents.

Tieche, who took the position in 1991, announced plans to retire in 2007 but agreed to hold off until a replacement was found. Joseph Warino, former Mahoning County sanitary engineer, replaced him Dec. 1.

Tieche has been acting as assistant city manager since that time to help Warino make the transition.

Councilwoman Marleen Belfiore presented Tieche with a retirement survival kit that included several everyday items to help remind him what retirement and life are all about.

Included was a rubber band to remind Tieche to be flexible, a tea bag to encourage him to relax daily and a pencil to list his blessings each day. Belfiore said a stick of gum will help remind him to “stick with it” and that he can accomplish anything during retirement.

Tieche’s last day on the job will be Jan. 29.

In other business, portions of Fairground Boulevard and Herbert Road will be resurfaced thanks to the federal government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The project will cost $400,000, money that will come from the economic-stimulus package enacted by Congress last year.

City council adopted a resolution Wednesday to approve resurfacing and authorizing Warino to enter into a contract for the work. Tieche said the project would probably be bid in March, with work beginning sometime after that. He did not have a timeline for when work will begin and end.

Herbert Road will be resurfaced from the city limits on the west end to the city limits at the Ohio Turnpike bridge on the east. Fairground Boulevard work includes the portion from South Broad Street, heading east to the city limits. Work will include asphalt pavement planning and resurfacing, curb repair and pavement marking.
