Memorial fund set for family of slain Pa. trooper

FRANKLIN, Pa. (AP) — A memorial fund has been established to benefit the family of a state trooper who was ambushed and killed by a suicidal gunman in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Forty-year-old Trooper Paul Richey was shot responding to a domestic dispute near his barracks in Franklin on Jan. 13. Investigators say 44-year-old Michael J. Smith shot Richey, then killed his own 53-year-old wife, Nancy Frey-Smith, before killing himself in Venango County’s Cranberry Township.

Richey is survived by a wife, Carrie, and two children, Connor, 9, and Catherine, 6.

Contributions may be sent to Richey Memorial Fund, First National Bank of Pennsylvania, 210 13th St., Franklin, Pa. 16323.
