Poland senior

Matthew James Woolford, 18, of Poland, a son of Richard Woolford and Marybeth Brennen, recently received his Eagle Scout award at a ceremony at Poland United Methodist Church.

Woolford and his father are the first father and son to both receive their Eagle Scout awards from Troop 2, which meets at the church. Woolford’s scoutmaster is Rodney J. Emerson.

Woolford joined Troop 2 in May 2003. He has been the troop’s patrol leader, den chief and senior patrol leader. He earned 24 merit badges, received the Arrow of Light Award from Cub Scout Pack 2 and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

He completed the mile swim at a summer camp for five consecutive years and is a Scout-certified lifeguard.

Woolford is a senior at Poland Seminary High School, where he is a member of the varsity soccer team. He is a member of Holy Family Church, Poland, where he is an altar server.

Canfield senior

Ryan T. Sankovic, 17, has earned his Eagle Scout Award, Boy Scouting’s highest honor. His court-of-honor ceremony took place Jan. 10 at St. Michael Church in Canfield.

Sankovic, a senior at Canfield High School, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Danny Sankovic. He began his Scouting career 11 years ago at St. Charles Church, Boardman, as a Tiger Cub.

He is a member of Troop 115 led by scoutmaster Andrew Welch.

Sankovic earned 23 merit badges, the Ad Altiere Religion Award, the Pope Pius XII Religion Award, completing Junior Leadership Training, and served as senior patrol leader among his Scouting accomplishments.

For six years while serving in Troop 115, he was top salesman for Boy Scout Popcorn, selling more than $2,500 in 2008 to earn a Scout scholarship.

His Eagle Scout service project consisted of planning and organizing a fundraiser at St. Michael, the proceeds going toward the purchase of new toys for underprivileged children served by the St. Michael Appalachian Partnership in Grahn, Ky. The excess funds were used for school supplies and heating oil for the community center in Kentucky.

Sankovic is an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Michael. At school, he is a member of the National Honor Society, top player on Canfield’s varsity tennis team, and lieutenant governor of District 21 in Northeast Ohio for Key Club.
