Snow should taper off by later tonight


YOUNGSTOWN — Snow accumulation in and around Youngstown should taper off by this evening, but Warren and its surrounding communities will continue to get walloped.

The National Weather Service expects 2 to 4 inches of snow to fall today in the Youngstown area.

There’s a 50-percent chance of snow after 7 p.m. today with less than a half-inch of accumulation expected, said Marty Thompson, a hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

The Warren area will get 3 to 5 inches of snow today and 2 to 4 inches more inches of snow tonight, Thompson said.

The snow won’t end in Warren until Saturday morning, he said.

On Thursday, 3.1 inches of snow fell on the Mahoning Valley, according to the NWS. The official snow amounts for the area are measured by the weather service at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

Between midnight and 7 a.m. today, 1.6 inches of snow fell.

As of 7 a.m. today, 16.3 inches of snow fell on the Valley so far this month.

The average snowfall for January for the area is 13.9 inches.

It’s also going to be remain cold.

The low tonight is expected to be 11 degrees.

The high on Saturday is supposed to reach 19 degrees with a low around 6 degrees.

The wind chill on Saturday night and Sunday morning is expected to be as low as 8 below zero.
