Casimiro Amos Ellis
YOUNGSTOWN
A man who was convicted of a homicide 10 years ago has pleaded guilty to an attempted murder that occurred earlier this year on a normally quiet residential street in Boardman.
Casimiro Ellis, 29, of East Avondale Avenue, pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Alynn S. Grant in April, with a firearm specification, and to being a felon with a gun.
Ellis will be sentenced at a later date by Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who accepted his plea Wednesday. Ellis is facing six to 18 years in prison and a fine of up to $30,000.
The prosecution dismissed a repeat-violent-offender specification and two felonious assault counts and is recommending that Ellis be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Ellis was released from prison in 2009 after serving 10 years on a voluntary manslaughter charge. He was convicted in 2000 in the shooting death of Karl Green.
In this year’s shooting, Grant, 32, of Liberty Road, told police he pulled into a driveway in the 6500 block of Mill Creek Boulevard and saw Ellis walking toward him with a gun. Ellis then shot him once in the leg and twice in the back.
Ellis was arrested a week later in Warren.
Police said the shooting was related to a woman who once shared the Boardman residence with Grant.
She and Grant had a relationship, but it was ending because of domestic issues, and she was in a relationship with Ellis when the shooting occurred, police said.
Grant was indicted in September on marijuana- and cocaine- trafficking charges.
Late last month, Grant pleaded no contest and was found guilty of drug trafficking. Grant, who will forfeit $13,000, will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 28 by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
The prosecution is recommending probation for Grant, but he could get up to five years in prison.
Grant told Judge Krichbaum he takes prescription pain pills because of the shooting and wears a leg brace for a shattered bone.
