Penguin soccer team falls at Toledo, 4-1

Toledo

Freshman Allison Ludwig scored her fifth goal of the season but the Youngstown State soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Toledo on Sunday.

The Rockets (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kristen Lynn just 3:25 into the match and Rachel MacLeod at the 8:02 mark.

Ludwig cut the deficit in half, 2-1, at the 10:21 mark but Lynn scored her second goal of the game at the 19:47 mark to put the Rockets ahead, 3-1.

With just 8:47 left in the game, MacLeod added another goal.

YSU is 1-3.

YSU volleyball team loses to W. Virginia

Morgantown, W.Va.

West Virginia posted a .295 attack percentage and held the Youngstown State volleyball team to a .023 percentage in a three-set sweep of the Penguins on Sunday at the WVU Classic.

WVU won 25-15, 25-10, 25-18 sending the Penguins to their third setback in three starts.

Tasha Reid led YSU in kills for the third time in three matches with six kills in 18 attempts. She had 23 kills to go along with a .227 attack percentage and nine block assists this weekend.

Haley Kapferer added five kills in 16 attempts for YSU.

Serinna Russo and Lauren Evans had 10 kills apiece for West Virginia.

Sharon Speedway

HARTFORD

The last Friday Night Thunder at Sharon Speedway saw a number of close feature races, as the race to lead in points was hotly contested in number of divisions.

Feature winners were Mark Marcucci in Mod Lites, Todd Walker in Sportsman, Craig Daniels in Micro Sprints, Bradley Blackshear in 2 bbl E-Mods, Robby Bartchy in Limited Sprints and Pete Blaczcak in Hobby Stocks.

Heading into the Mod Lite feature, Ken Meadows (Deerfield, Ohio) led the division in points by just five points. His 10T machine died in the heat race while he was leading.

Dustin Salvino loaned Meadows his car for the feature, letting Meadows start in the back of the pack.

Prep football shuttle

POLAND

The Poland athletic department will be offering a shuttle service for Friday’s football game against Austintown Fitch, starting at 5 p.m.

The shuttle location will be the vacant lot located behind Handels Ice Cream on the corner of Ohio route 224 and Clingan Rd.

The shuttle drop off and pick up location will be on the visitors’ side of the stadium.

The shuttle will end approximately one hour after the completion of the game. The shuttle service is complimentary.

Feller diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia

CLEVELAND

Indians legend Bob Feller, 91, has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

He said he has been receiving multiple chemotherapy shots every day “for the past week or so.”

“I’m just trying to be practical about it,” Feller said Sunday afternoon from his seat in the Progressive Field press box. “Normally, it’s curable ‘” but not always. Only time will tell. The prognosis is: So far, so good.”

Feller had been feeling weak and thought something was wrong with his heart. His eye doctor, during a routine checkup, sounded the alarm that blood was the problem.

Catchings leads Fever past Liberty, 75-67

INDIANAPOLIS

Tamika Catchings had 17 points and 13 rebounds to help the Indiana Fever beat the New York Liberty 75-67 on Sunday night to tie their best-of-three WNBA Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Catchings, who was selected the league’s defensive player of the year earlier in the day, helped the Fever fight off elimination and earn one more chance to defend their Eastern Conference crown. Game 3 is Wednesday at New York, with the winner advancing to face Atlanta in the conference finals.
