After a summer of fierce play by Valley teens, a Guitar Hero was finally crowned at the Boardman library.

Finalists from local competitions at branches of the Public Library and Youngstown and Mahoning County gathered Aug. 19 for the Teen Extreme Gamers Finale.

The field was narrowed to three before the finals began, as finalists from the Canfield and Main branches were unable to attend the event. The final three were Austintown finalist Jonah Breetz, Poland finalist Adam Bodendorfer and Newport finalist Dane Coast.

In double elimination rounds in Guitar Hero 5, the friendly, but competitive finalists agreed on the song played in each match.

In four rounds, Bodendorfer went undefeated, until Coast managed to win a round with The Police’s “Message in a Bottle” by a very close 3,000 points.

With the double elimination stipulation, Bodendorfer and Coast faced off in one last song with the title and $100 on the line. Both players showed fatigue, but Bodendorfer pulled away for the victory.

The $100 prize money didn’t stay in Bodendorfer’s pocket for long.

“I actually have a girl I’m taking out to dinner later tonight,” he explained.
