Top readers honored during NASA program
Children of all ages can sign up to learn NASA history and launch a paper rocket at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. The program will be held indoors if raining and an adult must accompany all children. Top readers from the Summer Reading program will be honored. Refreshments will be served.
Guess and win in September

Health at home program
St. Elizabeth Health Center will host the “Health at Home” program Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon or 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The program will teach self-care and how to make decisions about your health using Health at Home Æ, a book of instructions for more than 200 health problems.
All participants receive a free book, plus instruction on how to use the book.

Visit the family garden on sunny Fridays
Bring the kids for a drop-in visit to the Family Garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens on sunny Fridays to plant and water flowers or to read a book. The Family Garden Greeter at the discovery cart will tell visitors about the plants. Children can participate in hands-on activities. For information, call 330-740-7116.
ODOT plans traffic signal replacement
The Ohio Department of Transportation proposes to replace the existing electric traffic control device at the intersection of state Route 7 (Market Street) and Southwoods Avenue in Boardman Township.
During construction, two-way traffic will be maintained at all times at the state Route 7/Southwoods Avenue intersection except when it is necessary to stop traffic during the installation of overhead electric traffic control device signal heads.
The stoppage shall be limited to a maximum of 10 minutes and traffic may be stopped a maximum of one time in any one 30-minute period. No lane closures shall be implemented during the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. When the intersection electric traffic control device must be taken out of service by the project contractor, the outage shall not include the hours of 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The intersection shall be protected with law enforcement officers provided by the project contractor. Access shall be maintained to adjacent properties at all times during construction of the project. This project is expected to begin construction in the spring 2011.
Questions and/or comments regarding this project may be submitted by Aug. 30.
Boardman Lions “Coats for Kids” program
If you are experiencing financial difficulties and your kids need new coats, the Boardman Lions want to help.
Applications for the Boardman Lions Coats for Kids Program are available at www.boardmanlions.com, in the Boardman library and in the Boardman schools’ newsletters.
The application deadline is Sept. 10. You must be a Boardman resident to apply. Qualified applicants will be notified by mail. The families will attend a night at Target to select their new coats.
Women’s health night
The St. Elizabeth Breast Care Advisory Board presents “Women’s Health Night” from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.
The event will offer a free health screening and mammogram for women 40-64 who are underinsured or uninsured and who do not have a history of breast cancer.

Quilts needed for show
Lordstown High School will host the Fabric Patchers Annual Quilt show Sept. 18-19.
Quilts will be accepted Sept. 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the school’s library.
There is nonrefundable $5 entry fee. Proceeds go the Shop of the Cop. Registration forms can be picked up at the door Sept. 17 only.

CCNC hosts golf outing
Canfield Community Net Care is hosting its ninth annual Paul Baringer Golf Classic Sept. 13 at Mill Creek Park golf course in Canfield.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by breakfast at 10:15 a.m.
The shotgun start begins at 10:30 a.m.
Dinner and an awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.
Special events include a skill hole contest, 50/50 raffle, skins game and more.

Get a flu shot at the fair
Walgreens will offer seasonal flu shots at its location in the fairgrounds during the Canfield Fair.
The cost is $29.99, cash only or the co-pay of Medicare. The shots will be available every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Walgreens will be located at the corner of Miller and Kohler.
From Friday to Sept. 6, the AARP/Wellness bus will be on location and offering screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, glucose and body mass index from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Take a bus trip to New York City
You can visit New York City without driving yourself. The Nancy L. Weimer third annual ”NYC Shoptober Shuttle” is Oct. 15-17. Proceeds benefit the Nancy L. Weimer Scholarship Fund.
Weimer, a Boardman native, passed away in 2007 from cancer.
The trip honors the lives of those who have triumphed over cancer while remembering those who are no longer with us. The bus will depart at 6 a.m. Oct. 15 and leave NYC at 11 a.m. Oct. 17.
The cost is $315 for four people in a room, $365 for three people in a room and $470 for two people in a room.
Cost includes the bus trip, two nights at the Radisson Martinique Hotel on Broadway and a $30 donation to the Nancy L. Weimer Scholarship Fund.

Free family night tonight
Family Night at Boardman Park will take place tonight at the Maag Outdoor Theatre from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center will be open to visitors on Wednesdays until 8 p.m. through August. The Antonucci Library and Shop in the Gardens will have extended hours. The Garden Caf will be open until 7 p.m.

Enjoy yoga at Fellows Riverside Gardens
Instructor Heidi Suraci welcomes students of all levels to enjoy a blend of yoga styles amidst the powers of nature. Free hot dogs at Mill Creek MetroParks
Weather permitting, Mill Creek MetroParks will have free hot dogs for the public Mondays and Tuesdays. The hot dogs will be served Mondays at the James L. Make botanical pottery
Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a clay bowl embossed with leaf patters Sept. 14 at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The work will be glazed with autumn colors and ready to take home approximately three weeks after the class.

Mill Creek ABWA meeting in Canfield
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Sept. 14 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield at 6 p.m.

Become a triple threat performer this fall
The Stage Door School for Performing Arts will open in Liberty Township this fall and offer an array of classes in acting, dancing and singing that will develop the “Triple Threat” performer.
Students of all ages can choose from an entire catalog of dance subjects, acting sessions and voice classes. Workshops and clinics will be held regularly with casting agents and agencies from L.A. and New York City. Students will get to be a part of all plays, performances and musicals performed at The Stage Door. The Stage Door will also offer Visual Art classes, Fairytale Theatre (an enchanted fairyland for 2 to 8-year-olds), birthday parties and Drop-in Dance classes. Bring the entire family to MetroParks Farm Sept. 18 from 5-8 p.m. for a fall celebration. Ride a hay wagon pulled by draft horses, visit with farm animals, explore the AgVenture barn, get lost in a giant corn maze, sample cider and homemade apple butter and roast marshmallows over a campfire. Young children can search for toys in a haystack. Older children can compete in a sack race and adults can try an egg toss. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the sunset while folk singer John Mosey performs.
