Ohio school district drops student-driving ban

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

BELLBROOK, Ohio (AP) — Students are allowed to drive themselves to school again in an Ohio district that dropped a ban put in place decades ago after a deadly crash.

Bellbrook High School seniors old enough to get behind the wheel took advantage of the new policy when the school year began Tuesday.

Parents had pushed the school board to lift the ban, saying it hurt families with two working parents and made getting to after-school activities a hassle for students.

Superintendent Keith St. Pierre with the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek district in the Dayton suburbs says students were barred from driving to school in the 1970s after a crash that killed a student.

St. Pierre says about 120 of the high school’s 200 seniors have now signed up for a parking pass.
