NY governor, archbishop to discuss NYC mosque

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. David Paterson and Roman Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan are scheduled to meet and discuss a mosque and Islamic community center planned near ground zero.

The private meeting is set for Tuesday afternoon at the Democratic governor’s Manhattan office.

Paterson’s office wouldn’t detail the agenda. But Paterson and Dolan have sought to offer an alternate site because of the tensions around the project.

The developer of the project is expected to attend an annual dinner Tuesday night hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Opponents and protesters say the mosque should be moved farther from where Islamic extremists destroyed the World Trade Center in 2001. Supporters say religious freedom should be protected.
