Honor for veteran

AUSTINTOWN

A dedication ceremony to name part of Interstate Route 680 in honor of Navy Cross recipient Hospitalman (Corpsman) Richard “Doc” Powell will be Friday at the Korean War Veterans Memorial at Wickliffe Park. The public ceremony begins at 2 p.m.

The section of I-680 to be named starts at state Route 711 and extends in a northwest direction to state Route 11 in Mahoning County.

Powell, a Youngstown native killed in Vietnam on Aug. 29, 1968, while treating wounded Marines, recently was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor.

Neighborhood party

YOUNGSTOWN

The South Avenue Area Neighborhood Development Initiative and the Metro Assembly of God Church will have a Super Summer Neighborhood Party at 6 p.m. Thursday at Metro Assembly of God Church, SFlb2530 South Ave.

The neighborhood party will feature carnival games, a bounce house for children, music, a dunk tank, free food and beverages. There will be sharing of health information, crime and safety tips and distribution of fresh produce by Second Harvest Food Bank. The event is free and open to the public.

Teen shot in leg

WARREN

A 17-year-old Northwest Warren boy was hit in the leg by a gunshot early Sunday while sitting in a pickup truck in the parking lot of Trumbull Homes on North Feederle Drive Southeast with a friend.

The boy said he just had gotten into the truck when he heard gunfire about 10 minutes after midnight. Two bullet holes were found in the driver’s-side door.

The boy was treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Police: Gun was stolen

Police charged Charles E. Traylor, 58, of the 800 block of Sunshine Avenue in Youngstown, with receiving stolen property after stopping his vehicle about 10:40 p.m. Saturday on Gypsy Lane near the 711 connector.

Police saw the vehicle travel south on Belmont Avenue and then make a right turn from the passing lane on Belmont to Gypsy. Traylor told police he had a gun in the glove compartment and said he had a permit. When police checked, a report of a stolen gun came from Springfield Township police in Pennsylvania. The gun was loaded with 11 rounds. Traylor told police he bought the gun in Hermitage, Pa., from a friend of a cousin but could not supply the name. He was taken to Trumbull County Jail.

Donation to library

YOUNGSTOWN

The Greek Catholic Union Lodge 164 at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 356 S. Belle Vista Ave., has donated $1,225 to the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The local lodge raised $850 in a raffle, and the Creek Catholic Union of the USA added a partial match of $375. Many raffle participants reside on the city’s West Side and have an interest in their local branch, said Dr. Thomas Sopkovich, lodge secretary.

Fire hits mobile home

Damage was estimated at between $15,000 and $20,000 to a mobile home at Vintage Village trailer park on Belmont Avenue after a fire late Sunday afternoon. The fire department said the only resident of the trailer, a woman, escaped without injury and is being helped by the Red Cross. The fire department said the fire was accidental and the investigation continues.
