YOUNGSTOWN — Police say speed was a factor in the early morning accident today that killed two city residents.

Lamonte Jones Jr., 35, who listed addresses on Sherwood Avenue and Lanterman Road, Youngstown, was pronounced dead a the scene of a car accident at 5:43 a.m. near the corner of Market Street and Henry Street.

Also pronounced dead at the scene was his passenger Sherry Coleman, 51, who listed a West Judson Avenue address, according to the Mahoning County Coroner’s office.

According to Patricia Garcar of the Youngstown Police Department’s traffic division, Jones was driving north on Market Street at a high rate of speed when his car went left of center at a bend in the road.

She said Jones tried to straighten the car out, but went into a side slide, striking the telephone pole.

Jones and the passenger in the car were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Garcar said police are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
