After suffering through a winless regular and Federal League season a year ago, second-year boys golf team head coach Ed Santor is cautiously optimistic about his Falcons’ links squad this year.

Having already defeated Salem and splitting its first two matches to start the campaign, that optimism already seems to be paying dividends.

“We lost six seniors to graduation and we’re a young team, but we can be a good team if we improve each and every time out. “We will definitely be competitive,” Santor stated.

Gone from last year’s team are Nico Saborse, Mike Basista, Kevin Pangio, Zach Brinkman, Corey Sheely and Chris Miller.

Santor welcomes back just one senior in Jon Ullery and two juniors, Ian Offenbecher and Pat Rovnak. These three players will comprise the leadership for this year’s unit.

The strength of the team comes in its underclassmen numbers where six sophomores, Brian Basista, Adam Catauro, Matt Matasy, Kevin Miller, Anthony Sarachene and Scott Williams; and two freshmen, Vince Goleno and Alex Latone, will vie for tee time.

Two of those sophomores, Basista and Matasy, lettered as freshmen and are considered the top two in the standings. Classmate, Miller, who did not letter last season, worked hard in the off-season and to date has taken 10 strokes off of his game from a year ago.
