Drug rehab center buys Catholic Church in Akron
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Catholic Diocese is selling an Akron church to a drug rehabilitation agency.
Oriana House Services has purchased the former St. Hedwig Church, convent and rectory for $399,000. The agency also helps ex-convicts with education and employment services.
St. Hedwig is the second closed church to be sold by the diocese. In February, Holy Cross Church in Elyria was sold to a nondenominational ministry.
The eight-county Cleveland diocese is closing or merging 50 parishes, blaming declining numbers of priests, parishioners and finances.
