The Youngstown State baseball team ran into a hot-hitting Pittsburgh squad that scored 17 runs in the first five innings and won a slugfest 21-12 over the Penguins on Wednesday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

The 24th-ranked Panthers scored four unearned runs in the first inning behind the first of five Penguin errors on the day, and they scored 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings.

Derek Carr and Tom Clayton each had three hits and drove in four runs, and Jacke Healey reached base five times for YSU.

Canfield

Cleveland State’s Amanda Macenko fired a one-hitter with six strikeouts to defeat the Youngstown State softball team 9-0 in six innings at McCune Park on Wednesday.

Macenko, who pitched three perfect innings in yesterday’s second game, gave up a single to Autumn Grove in the bottom of the third inning and did not allow another Penguin to reach base.

Curry’s performance earns

her field athlete of week honor

Indianapolis

Youngstown State junior thrower Danielle Curry has been named the Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week after breaking her own school record in the shot put and throwing a personal-best distance in the discus at the All-Ohio Championships.

Curry finished second in the shot put with a throw of 15.48m and claimed fifth in the discus with a heave of 44.42m. Curry broke her previous-best mark in the shot put by 1.26m and now ranks fifth in school history in the discus.

The shot put distance ranks 32nd in the country and also ranks atop the top Horizon League performance list.

Curry is the third Penguin to be named Athlete of the Week during the outdoor circuit, joining Alisha Anthony and Bryin Ehrdardt.

The track squad  will compete in the Penn Relays, the Sparky Adams Invite and the Ashland Invitational this weekend.

Alumni reunion set for May 7

Youngstown

This year’s YSU Football Alumni Club Spring Reunion is set for Friday, May 7. Festivities for both the Golf Outing and Spaghetti Dinner will be held on the same day for the first time. The Golf Outing will be held at the picturesque Kennsington Golf Course in Canfield while the dinner will be later that evening at Mr. Anthony’s at the Maronite Center.

The golf outing at Kennsington is set for noon while the annual Spaghetti Dinner gathering is set to start at approximately 6 p.m.

The Golf Outing is $95 for non-members ($80 for members) and features the opportunity for a Hole-In-One Car provided by Columbiana Buick-Cadillac-Chevrolet and skills prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and longest putt. Tee/Green Signs are also available for $50 per sign.

The Spaghetti Dinner is $20 for non-members ($15 for members).
