McVicker concert

GIRARD

His Music Connection will present Dove Award-winning contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Mitch McVicker in concert April 24 at the former Wellman Theater, 29 W. Liberty St., Girard. The performance is part of McVicker’s “Always Believe” tour. McVicker earned a Dove Award for “My Deliverer is Coming,” which he co-wrote with the late Rich Mullins. He and Mullins, who penned “Awesome God” and other favorite Christian worship songs, were en route to a concert when they were involved in an automobile accident in September 1997. Mullins was killed and McVicker was seriously injured. After a long recovery, McVicker returned to writing and recording music and traveling to share his testimony and the word of God. The evening will also feature music by the His Music Connection Band and singer/songwriter Jenah Ross. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with music scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Admission is $5. First Friday Club

Dr. Diana Culbertson of the Dominican Sisters of Peace will be the featured speaker when the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown meets May 6 at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St. Sister Diana will speak on “Contemporary Scapegoats: Insights from Ren Girard.” The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $15. Men’s Day event

St. Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal Church, 521 W. Earle Ave., will celebrate Men’s Day at the 10:45 a.m. service Sunday. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Charles A. Montgomery Jr., a native of Youngstown, and a professor of religion and philosophy at Central State University. He is a graduate of Morehouse College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Emory University with a master of divinity and Trans Union Institute and University of Cincinnati with a doctorate in ethical leadership. Montgomery was licensed and ordained as a Baptist minister at Third Baptist Church under the auspices of Rev Dr. Morris W. Lee and serves as the host pastor of Power Lunch Columbus, a nondenominational noon worship service in downtown Columbus.

Haiti quake is topic

The earthquake in Haiti will be the focus of worship and learning Sunday at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., with the Rev. Bob Libby of Food For The Poor (FFTP) of Miami, as the preacher and teacher. The service is at 10 a.m. and adult forum at 11:30.

Food For The Poor is the major nonprofit relief agency at work in Haiti and is the top international relief agency in the country and the fourth-largest charity in the U.S. In 2009, FFTP provided more than $1 billion worth of goods and services to the poor in the Caribbean basin at an overhead/administrative/fund-raising cost of less than 4 percent.

Libby is a retired Episcopal priest, who joined the agency’s speakers bureau after his first visit to Haiti. He has served parishes in Florida, and his last assignment was that of interim dean of Trinity Cathedral, Miami. Visit www.foodforthepoor.org.

Volunteer meeting

There will be an informational meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, for anyone interested in being part of a volunteer-in-mission team to an orphanage in St. Petersburg, Russia. The two-week trip will take place during mid-May of 2011; the exact dates of the trip have not yet been set. The team will live and work in an orphanage, interact with the children, age 5 to 18, provide supplies and gifts, buy needed items for the children and orphanage and do some sightseeing in St. Petersburg. Leaders of the mission team are the Rev. David Joachim, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian, and the Rev. Kathryn Adams, director of Protestant Campus Ministry at Youngstown State University. Taiz prayer

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will conduct a Taiz prayer from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Magnificat Chapel at Villa Maria Community Center. The Taiz prayer service is based on a ritual developed by an ecumenical community in France dedicated to prayer and simplicity. Taiz is a Christian interdenominational prayer form which incorporates music, Scripture and silence. There is no registration or fee required for this service, but a good- will offering will be accepted.

The Male Chorus of Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 718 Albert St., will sponsor a pre-Men’s Day musical program at 5 p.m. Saturday with male choruses from the city featured. James Smith is director and the Rev. Amariah McIntosh, pastor. Men’s Day will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Sunday with guest preacher, the Rev. David Moncrief of Triedstone Baptist Church. The theme is “Christian Men with a Vision to See, Faith to Believe and Courage to Do.” The Rev. Mr. McIntosh is host pastor. James Smith, Paul Jackson and Ken Heriott, are chairmen.

Crowning Glory Tea

Oak Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Elk St., will present its second annual Crowning Glory Tea at 4 p.m. Sunday with Pastor Sylvia Jennings as keynote speaker. There is an $8 donation for adults and $4 for children from 6 to 12 years old. Prizes and refreshments will be featured. Those attending should wear their favorite hats.
