Kelly Pavlik Live: Scoring Tonight's Fight

When the Kelly Pavlik vs. Sergio Martinez fight gets under way – sometime around 11 p.m. on HBO – the fight will be scored right here by unofficial scorekeeper Managing Editor Mark Sweetwood.

Closely following the "the unified rules of the associations of boxing committee," the fight will be scored on the 10-point must system. The winner of a round gets 10 points; the loser, if merely outscored, gets nine points. A fighter who loses a round and gets knocked down in the process gets eight points. Two knockdowns? Seven points. Three knockdowns? a six-point score is not unusual.

As Harold Lederman will no doubt tell HBO viewers right before the fight, there is no three-knockdown rule (meaning, the fight will not be automatically halted because of a third knockdown in a single round) and "a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the 12th and final round, Jim!"

The HBO show starts at 10 p.m. with a super middleweight title fight pitting champion Lucian Bute against Edison Miranda. The main event features Pavlik vs. Martinez.
