Deal to end Pa. budget stalemate encounters Dem opposition

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

HARRISBURG (AP) — A deal to end Pennsylvania’s state budget impasse is encountering substantial opposition among Democrats in the state House, raising new doubts about whether it can pass.

House Democratic Leader Todd Eachus said after a four-hour closed-door caucus meeting in Pennsylvania’s Capitol on Tuesday that he planned to call up a bill to tax the extraction of natural gas.

That’s not a part of the deal that House Democratic leaders announced more than a week ago with Gov. Ed Rendell and the state Senate. Some House Democrats are objecting to parts of the deal.
