SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A two-goal third period propelled the Omaha Lancers to Thursday’s 4-2 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms at the USHL Fall Classic at the IBP Ice Center.

Brett Gensler scored both Phantoms goals while the team was killing a penalty.

With the score tied 2-2 in the third period, the Lancers’ Matt White scored an even-strength goal.

With nine minutes to go, Erik Haula’s power-play drive from the right point beat Phantoms goaltender Jordan Tibbett for the final goal for the Lancers, the 2008 Clark Cup champions.

Today at 10:30 a.m., the Phantoms (1-2) will play the Des Moines Buccaneers, who defeated Green Bay 4-2 at the Tyson Events Center.

Gensler’s first short-handed tall gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead in the first period. With Ryan Jasinsky serving a crosschecking penalty, Luke Eibler’s clearing attempt glanced off a Lancers defenseman and popped into the neutral zone where Gensler scooped it up in full flight. He then swept a forehand around Lancers goalie Jeff Teglia for the only goal of the opening period.

Omaha’s Troy Power and Colin Markison scored for a 2-1 lead.

On a penalty kill, Gensler pushed the puck through defenseman Joe Lavin’s feet twice then put a wristshot through Teglia’s legs.

Late in the second period, Youngstown’s Adam Berkle and Omaha’s Power fought. Tibbett used his blocker to stop the Lancers’ Nick Oddo on a penalty shot

The Fall Classic concludes Saturday. The Phantoms will return home to begin preparations for the regular-season opener on Oct. 3 at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown.

Opening faceoff between the Phantoms and the defending USHL champion Indiana Ice is set for 7:15 p.m.

The Opening Night celebration starts early with a pregame tailgate party. Rally towels will be distributed at the gate and Phantoms fans are encouraged to help Black Out the Covelli Centre by wearing black apparel to the game. Pretzels, hot dogs and sodas will cost $2 apiece during the game.
