Boehner: Protests are the result of political rebellion

Sunday, September 20, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio says nationwide protests known as “tea parties” are the result of pushback against Democrats’ spending.

Boehner says his Democratic colleagues are “bankrupting” the country.

People are demonstrating and attending town-hall meetings because, Boehner said, “we’re in the midst of a political rebellion in America.”

The congressman spoke Saturday at the annual gathering of the religious right at the Values Voter Summit in Washington.

Boehner says he attended a tea party over Labor Day weekend near his home of West Chester, Ohio, that drew 18,000 people. He says the crowd told members of Congress that “enough is enough.”

Last weekend, tens of thousands of protesters fed up with government spending marched to the Capitol.
