Friday, September 18, 2009

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service says a carrier has been shot and injured while delivering mail in a Cleveland-area city.

Postal Service spokesman Victor Dubina says 53-year-old Daniel Kondas had just begun the route in Maple Heights sometime Thursday morning when the shooting took place.

Kondas was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where spokeswoman Susan Christopher says he is in critical condition.

Maple Heights police were releasing no immediate information.

Dubina says Kondas joined the postal service in 1986 and has been working from the Maple Heights branch of the Cleveland Post Office since 2000.

Resident Beatrice Morgan tells WJW-TV that Dubina was always on time, well-liked, courteous and polite.
