Poland Library Friends will meet, hear speaker

POLAND — Friends of the Poland Library will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for coffee, followed by the 10 a.m. business meeting.

Guest speaker, Dr. George McCloud, vice president for university advancement at Youngstown State University, will speak on “China: A World View.”

Recent book and magazine donations will be accepted for the Poland Friends book cart fundraiser.

Cheer for a Cure event planned at YMCA in Pa.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Community YMCA of New Castle will present the second annual Cheer for a Cure, a regional cheerleading charity event to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The event is scheduled for Monday at the Y-Zone, 428 Eleanor Drive. The public is invited. Doors open at 11 a.m., and activities begin at noon.

Highlights include a Chinese auction, 50-50 drawing, squad competitions (grades 3 to 12) “cheergrams,” flowers, jump-off and tumble-off, food concessions and more.

Admission fees: free for age 5 and under; $3 for ages 6-12; and $5 for ages 13 and up.

Hubbard school stands out in Olive Garden program

CLEVELAND — Elementary, middle and high school students in northern Ohio collected $189,000 in spare change to support Olive Garden’s 15th annual Pasta for Pennies program benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

More than $5.3 million was donated by students throughout the nation this year, bringing the total raised for LLS to $47 million since the program’s inception in 1994.

The class collecting the most money at each school receives a pasta party delivered to the classroom by their local Olive Garden Restaurant.

Among the top fundraising schools was Roosevelt Elementary in Hubbard with $5,843.

‘The Bishop’s Wife’ heading to Sebring

SEBRING — Sebring Historical Society will take “The Bishop’s Wife” to the Strand Theatre Museum, 15th St., as a holiday event and fundraiser.

The classic film will play daily at 7 p.m. from Dec. 4-9. The cost is $15 for members and $18 for nonmembers. The ticket price includes hors d’oeuvres, desserts, drinks, favors, popcorn, candy, movie trivia and museum displays.
