City police probe robberies
YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating several armed robberies that took place in the city Thursday and Friday, with one man left shot in the abdomen.
Just before 1 a.m. Friday, Charles Boerio, 34, of Brooklyn Avenue told police he was standing in the driveway of his South Side home when two men approached with one man pulling out a handgun. The robbers demanded all of Boerio’s possessions, including an undetermined amount of cash, cigarettes and an MP3 player.
He told police he gave the men the items, but the gunman shot him in the abdomen. Another resident in the house found Boerio outside bent over at the waist after the shooting.
Boerio was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was able to speak with police. He was reported in critical condition Friday evening.
According to police, an East Side businessman was robbed in his Augusta Street store just after 10 a.m. Thursday by two men wielding handguns.
The 44-year-old store owner told police the men came into the store wearing all dark clothes and ski masks and made him lie on the floor behind the store counter. The robbers put duct tape around the man’s wrists and went through his pockets, taking his wallet and $1,500.
The robbers went through the store and also stole a firearm and 20 packs of cigarettes before running out the front door. The store owner freed himself of the duct tape and hit the police alarm. He found his wallet a short distance from the business.
A Chinese restaurant delivery man told police he was robbed of $19 and two bags of Chinese food during a delivery on the South Side at 8:50 p.m. Thursday.
The 46-year-old delivery man told police that he pulled into a driveway in the 400 block of Parkcliff Avenue to deliver the food and noticed a man approach the car from the driver’s side. The man pulled a handgun from his pants and pointed it at the delivery man, reports said.
The delivery man told police a second man appeared and said, “Give it to me,” prompting the delivery driver to hand over the money and food.
No arrests have been made in any of the robberies.
