Owe taxes? Contact treasurer’s office

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Treasurer Lisa Antonini is making her final appeal to landowners who have not paid taxes in full this year: Request a payment plan immediately to avoid legal action against your property.

Certified letters to owners of tax-delinquent properties will be mailed over the next few days. The letters notify owners of possible legal action on their property and additional fees that are being assessed for overdue payments.

This year, there are about 2,700 parcels that are taxed delinquent for the first time, with about $3.3 million due in taxes.

Anyone who has missed either or both semiannual property-tax payments this year should contact the treasurer’s office immediately, Antonini said in a press release.

Ohio law allows property owners to enter into repayment plans of up to five years. A fraction of their delinquent taxes and assessments will be added to future bills.

Taxpayers on active payment plans are not charged additional penalties and interest as long as they abide by the agreement, Antonini said. A payment plan is a contract that must be signed by the property owner to be valid, she added.

Landowners who do not request payment plans may be subject to legal action as well as additional fees and costs.

The treasurer’s office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Call (330) 740-2460 for more information.
