Ohio's most-populous county could get new government look

Friday, October 30, 2009

CLEVELAND (AP) — Voters in Ohio’s most populous county face a decision Tuesday on competing ballot issues for the future of government in the Cleveland area.

The options offered would to replace a Cuyahoga County administration targeted in a federal corruption investigation.

One would create a study commission. The other would install an elected county executive and 11-member council.

Democrats who control county government have largely backed the study commission, which could let them shape any changes. Many business interests and Republicans largely shut out of county government support the county executive proposal.

Among Ohio’s 88 counties, only Summit County, which includes Akron, has a county executive form of government. Most U.S. counties have commissions.
