2 jailed on charges of armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN — Two men are in Mahoning County jail accused of having a role in the armed robbery of an 83-year-old woman earlier this month.
Police arrested Damon Williams, 21, of Earle Avenue, and Jonathan Tellington, 20, of Crescent Street, Struthers, on Wednesday at Tellington’s home and charged each with one count of aggravated robbery.
Williams and Tellington appeared Thursday for arraignment before Judge Elizabeth Kobly of Youngstown Municipal Court. Prosecutors told the judge Tellington had no prior criminal record, but Williams does have a prior conviction for carrying a concealed weapon.
Judge Kobly set bond for both men at $50,000 and ordered them to have no contact with the woman they are accused of robbing at gunpoint.
Police were called to a check-cashing business on Youngstown-Poland Road just before 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16. When officers arrived at the business, it was discovered that two men, one carrying a silver handgun, had approached an 83-year-old Youngstown woman leaving the business and snatched her purse.
The woman told police she screamed and struggled with the men before they ripped the purse from her grasp. The woman told officers the struggle left her with pains, but she refused medical attention.
The men ran off after taking the purse.
A 33-year-old man who had given the woman a ride to the business witnessed the robbery. An employee at the business told police she saw the men walking back and forth in the area for about three hours.
The purse contained a checkbook, driver’s license and about $100.
