Boardman in district title match


STOW — Boardman High’s volleyball team advanced to the Division I district championship game Tuesday night, defeating Cuyahoga Falls in three games 25-23, 25-6 and 25-12.

The Spartans (19-5) will take on host Stow in the district final on Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to next week’s regional tournament. Stow beat Copley in four games, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 25-25.

The Spartans were down 18-9 in the opening set, tied it at 19-19 before falling behind 23-20. They then served out to win the game.

“We came out of a timeout at 18-10 with total concentration and a will to win,” said coach Glen Sivak.

Stephanie Sfara led the Spartans with 17 points, four aces, 13 kills and 12 digs, while Nicole Bingetti added 12 points, seven kills and 12 digs. Monica Tauvelle finished with 18 points eight kills, three blocks and 12 assists, while Amanda Larson added eight kills and six blocks.

Division III

SALEM — Springfield had its hands full, but still managed to get past Girard in the district semifinal.

The Tigers (21-1), seeded No. 1 in the tournament, won 25-18, 27-25, 25-18, and will meet East Palestine in the district championship game on Thursday at 6 p.m. East Palestine defeated United in the other semifinal, 25-18, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19. The winner of Thursday game will advance to the Barberton Reginals next week.

Larissa Santangelo led the Tigers with 11 kills, seven blocks, five points and three aces, while Ashley Davis had nine kills and 10 points. Brooke Schrieber added seven kills and nine points and Catherine Evan had five blocks.

The Indians (17-8) were led by Chelsea Guerreri with nine kills and 17 digs, while Morgan Walters added eight points, three aces and 15 assists. Lindsey Crown had eight kills and three blocks and Bryanna Jay seven kills and four blocks.

Division IV

LISBON — Brooke Pregibon scored 19 points while Megan O’Dell added 15 kills and 16 blocks as Mathews came from two games down to defeat Wellsville in the district semifinal, 19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-13.

The Mustangs (22-2) will meet Western Reserve for the district championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. Western Reserve (22-3) defeated Jackson-Milton in the other semifinal, 25-2, 25-16, 25-20.

Jonna Omerzo added 36 digs for the Mustangs, while Sara Hewitt had 10 kills, Steffany Armstrong three aces and Kayla Manz finished with 50 assists. Sarah Drisdale had four aces and 20 kills for Wellsville while Shantae Dillard added nine kills.

Claire Ferrando led the Blue Devils with 11 points, 25 assists and 64 sets, while Victoria Brown had 11 kills, six blocks and three aces. Heather Manoski added 12 kills.

Jackson-Milton (17-7) was led by Maddie Griffith with eight points, four assists, 36 sets and two aces, while Jessica Ripple added 10 kills and Karynn Maskarinec had six digs.
