Salem girls win meet at Malone

CANTON — Salem junior Betsy Yuhaniak placed second overall to lead the Quakers to the girls team title at Saturday’s Division II district cross country meet at Malone University.

Salem placed all seven runners in the top 22, with freshman Mallory Maher taking fourth, freshman Allison Moore seventh, sophomore Gabby Shivers 13th and senior Bethany Huston 17th to key the Quakers’ top five.

Salem edged Marlington, 41-48.

West Branch junior Andrea Wingett placed 11th to earn an individual spot at next week’s regional meet at Boardman High School.

Columbiana sophomore Ashley Lydic placed fourth overall in the Division III race to help the Clippers place third and advance. Lisbon was fifth to also earn a qualifying spot.

Individually, East Palestine senior Leighann Kelvington placed second.

In Division I, Canfield junior Nicole Tiberio placed 13th, Cardinal freshman Jennifer Love was 22nd and Boardman junior Katie Heney was 23rd to earn individual qualifying spots. No area teams advanced.

On the boys side, West Branch senior Joey Schlueter placed third in Division II to help the Warriors finish fourth and claim the final team qualifying spot. Teammates Drake Lohnes (13th) and John Page (15th) also ran well.

Boardman senior Sam Deskin placed fifth in Division I and Howland senior Aaron Sutton took sixth to earn trips to the regional meet.

In Division III, Southern sophomore Jared Sevek placed sixth overall and Columbiana senior Ryan Sampson was 13th as both advanced.
