Groundbreaking scheduled for materials-recovery facility

STAFF REPORT

POLAND — A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday in Poland Park for a materials-recovery facility.

Greenstar North America, a recycling company based in Houston but with operations in Pittsburgh and Allentown, Pa., is building the facility in the township near the Carbon Limestone Landfill, a division of Republic Services.

Greenstar is receiving partial grant funding supplied by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention.

The Mahoning County Refuse & Recycling Division, better known as the Green Team, will administer the $250,000 ODNR grant, and Greenstar is providing cash and supplemental funding for the facility and equipment, according to the Green Team press release.

The facility will be in Poland Park, near Cowden Road.

The materials-recovery facility is a place where recycled bottles, cans, cardboard, newspaper and other paper are sorted and baled or put into containers.

The county’s recyclable materials, including the curbside items, are collected by Allied Waste Industries as a free service.

The facility is scheduled for operation in June, and the county commissioners say it will generate jobs and “boost the area’s economy,” according to the press release. There was no word as to how many jobs would be created.
