Five candidates are running for three Salem council at-large seats. An (*) denotes the incumbent. Republican Joseph M. Radin Jr. did not respond to a Vindicator request for information, nor did Tod A. Mumpire, the incumbent Democrat council president or his Republican challenger, Mickey Weaver.

K. BRET APPLE* (D)

Age: 48

Home: 1587 Shady Lane, Salem.

Education: University of Akron School of Law, law degree; Hiram College, bachelor’s degree in management; graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School, 1983.

Employment: Partner in Williams & Apple Co., former Columbiana County Municipal Court judge.

Family: Wife, Suzan.

Priority: “Revenue to properly operate the city, while being fiscally responsible, is the bottom line. Development of new businesses would bring more employees to the city, which would increase the tax base and increase revenues. This can be done by development of a new industrial park and city cooperation with the Sustainable Opportunity Development Center, which will help and assist in the development of new businesses.”

CLYDE BROWN* (D)

Age: 71

Home: 760 W. Wilson St., Salem.

Education: Salem High School graduate in 1956.

Employment: Retired, formerly worked for Adelphia Communications

Family: Wife, Barbara J.; two sons and a daughter.

Priority: “I will continue to recommend cutting unnecessary spending and living within the budget. You can’t ask people that are losing their jobs, homes and their future to give what they don’t have.”

RANDALL COLIAN (D)

Age: 45

Home: 816 Jefferson Ave., Salem.

Education: Graduate of Salem High School and a 1991 graduate of the Salem Police Academy.

Employment: A banking officer and collections manager at Farmers National Bank since 1998, formerly a Salem police officer.

Family: Wife, Nina; two daughters and a son.

Priority: “I am seeking this office to try and make Salem a better place to live and work. The major issue for me is to get economic development into the city, upgrade our city services and stabilize city finances. Also, I would like to work at looking into grants for the city.”

BRIAN WHITEHALL (R)

Age: 37

Home: 2401 Tanglewood Drive, Salem.

Education: Salem High School graduate, scheduled to complete a bachelor’s degree at Malone University with a major in organizational management in December.

Employment: Vice president and general manager and one-third owner of Custom Cut Aluminum, Inc.

Family: Wife, Shannon; a daughter and a son.

Priority: “I believe that when personal agendas and political infighting takes over then the citizens’ work gets left undone. and that business professionals should lend their expertise navigating through this economic climate in which city budgets are stretched.”
