Briarfield Manor plans ribbon-cutting ceremony

AUSTINTOWN — Briarfield Manor, 461 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will have a ribbon- cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday for its new rehabilitation gym. The gym was added to meet the demand for short-term rehabilitation, which has grown 22 percent this year, a spokesperson at Briarfield said. The center also has expanded capacity to 116 by adding 18 beds.

“Over the years, we were unable to admit all of the people who needed or wanted long-term care in our center because we just did not have available beds,” said Diane Reese, administrator.

Coitsville trustees

COITSVILLE — Township trustees meet at 7 p.m. today at the Township Administration Building, 3711 McCartney Road.

Temporary closing

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor museum on West Wood Street will be closed today through Friday because of water problems. It will reopen Saturday.

DSAV ribbon cutting planned for Thursday

BOARDMAN— A ribbon cutting for The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley Center for Success is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. The event will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the facility, 945 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 12.

The nonprofit organization began in 2007 to “provide support, resources, advocacy, education and opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome and their families” in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, according to a news release from the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.

The new location will help the organization provide information and support to groups interested in the genetic disorder.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that is physically evident in low muscle tones, small stature and an upward slant to the eyes, according to the National Down Syndrome Society.

Trick or Treat tonight at Eastwood Field

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Buckeye Online School for Success will present the 11th annual Trick or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Eastwood Field with media partners WFMJ Channel 21, WBCB, and Clear Channel.

Trick or Treat at Eastwood Field is a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween for children 12 and under. Tickets are $1 each and are available at the Scrappers Team Office at Eastwood Field. Tickets are limited to the first 1,500 children 12 and under. Parents do not need tickets to attend.

All proceeds will be donated to the Luke Holko Fund.

Meet your candidates

BOARDMAN — Mahoning County Teenage Republicans is hosting a township candidates meet-and-greet event at 7 p.m. Thursday at the county Republican Party headquarters, 621 Boardman-Canfield Road (across from Camelot Lanes) in the Summitville Tile building.

All candidates for trustee and school board in Boardman, Canfield and Austintown have been invited. The public is invited. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted, and refreshments will be provided.

WARREN — The Warren Community PTA will have a candidates night at 6 p.m. Tuesday for candidates running for Warren City Board of Education. It will be at the United Steelworkers Local Union Hall, 684 N. Park Ave.
