Springfield squeaks past Struthers, 2-1


NEW MIDDLETOWN — Lexy Zubick and Kristin Evans scored goals and Jaclyn Tabaka had an assist for the Springfield High girls soccer team, which defeated visiting Struthers 2-1 in a Division II sectional semifinal.

Tiffany Johnson had six saves for the Tigers, who will play at Warren JFK at 4 p.m. Thursday.

For Struthers, Ashley Baron scored and Katie Jordon had 15 saves.

Warren JFK 9, Maplewood 0

WARREN — Erin McBride scored her first of three goals five minutes into the match to lead the top-seeded Eagles (15-1-1).

Senior Jerrica Cooper and Maddie Lockhart had two goals apiece and Kelli Guarnieri and Adrian Ashdown also scored. McBride and Cooper each had two assists, while Ashdown, Guarnieri, Natalie Pleiss and Sammie Jo Marzullo had one assist apiece. Helena Democopoulas and Kelsey Case had one save apiece.

Valerie Blank had 17 saves for Maplewood (0-16).

Lakeview 7, Columbiana 0

CORTLAND — Nicole Moldovan had two goals and Lindsey Clark had two goals and one assist for the Bulldogs (11-4-2), who will meet Bristol at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lakeview High.

Justine Defrancesco also scored and Jen Ulam, Allie Gagne and Alli Olbrych had assists. Casey Boldt made one save.

For Columbiana, Tori Drago had 15 saves.

Champion 7, Crestview 0

CHAMPION — Marissa Walker had four goals and one assist to lead Champion (9-3-5) .

Morgan White one goal and one assist and Chelsea Armstrong and Breanna Wargo each had one goal for the Flashes. Taryl Hannah and Paige Loychick had assists, while Taylor Petersal and Angel Lipps had two saves apiece.

Megan Foster had 26 saves for Crestview (2-14-1).

Champion advanced to meet Ursuline Thursday at 7 p.m. at Champion.

Ursuline 2, Badger 1

KINSMAN — Briana Curd and Olivia Murphy each scored for Ursuline (8-8-1). Anita Smith had five saves.

Cara Prior scored Badger’s goal and Kelsey Flowers had four saves.

South Range 3, Girard 0

NORTH LIMA — Senior Taylor Witmer and juniors Emily Meals and Katelin Smith all scored for the Raiders, who will play at Mooney at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Kristin Robinson had two saves.

For Girard, Melissa Weitzman had 12 saves.

Salem 14, Canton South 2

SALEM — Abi Pasco scored five goals and had an assist for Salem, which will play either St. Thomas Aquinas or Streetsboro on Thursday at Reilly Stadium.

Peyton Meals and Amiee Jones each added two goals, while Hallie Hank and Chelsea Fuson each had a goal and an assist. Allison Thompson and Brynn Crowgey combined for three saves.

Rootstown 3, Newton Falls 2

NEWTON FALLS — Jenny Conley had one, Kaylee Consolo and Grace Durbak scored for Rootstown (10-4-3).

For Newton Falls (8-4-5), Destiny Smith had one goal and Mykala Crouser scored off an assist Angela Giuliano. Rebecca Humberger had 16 saves.

LaBrae 1, Garrettsville Garfield 0

LEAVITTSBURG — Julie Gibson scored the goal on an assist by Sarah Ancell. LaBrae goalkeeper Kelsie Daniel made six saves.

Chelsea Cook made nine saves for Garfield.

Canfield 8, Warren Harding 0

CANFIELD — Canfield scored on eight of its 18 shots on goal with Audrey Smith and Alys Cook getting two apiece in the win over Harding.

Gia Nigro, Katie Siskowik, Paige Baker and Rachel Morris all added one goal each, while Morris, Baker and Shelby Lazar each had an assist. Kely Fening had two saves.

Harding’s goalkeeper Cierra Sparks had five saves.

Fitch 4, Hubbard 0

AUSTINTOWN — Kristen Schmidt, Christian Goleno, Tori Koch and Jen Shiley scored for Fitch (11-4-2). Emily Durina had two assists, while Meghan Shonce and Koch had two assists apiece for the Falcons.

Goalie Mariah Gordon had 13 saves for Hubbard (4-9-4), while Fitch keeper Ali Tolich had one save.
