Unwanted snow blowers, shovels sought for youth-training program

YOUNGSTOWN — Because of the success of its lawn-mower training, the Youngstown Northside Weed and Seed is accepting any unwanted snow blowers and snow shovels.

Weed and Seed is planning to teach at least 10 youths the proper maintenance of a snow blower. Eventually, the youths can use them to assist people in clearing drives and walkways during the winter season.

Last year, more than 12 lawn mowers were donated to Weed and Seed. With those lawn mowers, 10 youths were taught how to change the spark plug and oil, sharpen the blade, work with the motor, etc. The youths then cut grass for people in the target area.

“We proved that we can make a difference,” said Terry Bryant, Weed and Seed coordinator. “With winter coming, we want to help those who are unable to clear their driveway after the snow hits.”
