Devils 2, Hurricanes 0

NEWARK, N.J. — Clinging to a one-goal lead in the closing minutes against the Carolina Hurricanes, Martin Brodeur wasn’t thinking about career shutout No. 102. Brodeur was thinking about last year and the Canes’ miraculous comeback in final 80 seconds of Game 7 of the first round of the playoffs. Remember? Carolina scored twice and sent the New Jersey Devils packing. “You don’t forget these things. You try to learn from it,” Brodeur said after making 26 saves to move within one shutout of tying Terry Sawchuk’s NHL career record. Jamie Langenbrunner broke the scoreless duel between Brodeur and Cam Ward early in the third period with a goal off his shoulder.

Thrashers 4 Sabres 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, and Johan Hedberg made 40 saves and added an assist in his first start of the season to help send Atlanta to its best start in franchise history. Todd White and Maxim Afinogenov also scored for the Thrashers, whose 4-1-0 start is the best beginning to a season since the team’s inception in 1999. Hedberg continued his mastery of the Sabres by improving to 11-2-1 lifetime against Buffalo, and helped hand the Sabres (4-1-1) their first regulation loss of the season.

Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 1

TORONTO — Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist, and the New York Rangers earned their seventh straight win. San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov made 31 saves in his 500th NHL game and Ryan Vesce’s first NHL goal broke a 1-all tie as the Sharks (4-3-1) snapped a two-game losing streak. Thornton assisted on San Jose’s first two goals to extend his league-leading total to 11. Vesce and Patrick Marleau started the stretch of four unanswered goals with second-period scores. The Islanders are still looking for their first victory of the season (0-3-3).
