Local runners pace teams into top 10 at Sim Earich Inv.


BAZETTA — McDonald’s Jerry Dugan placed first with a time of 17:24.77 and teammate Patrick Kunkel was third to lead the Blue Devils to a runner-up finish in the Division III race at Saturday’s Sim Earich Invitational at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ top four runners finished 5-8 to lead the Knights to the team title with 36 points. McDonald was second with 59 and Maplewood fourth with 119. Dallas Bright was fourth for the Rockets.

Poland senior Sean Murphy placed third and Howland’s Aaron Sutton was fourth in the Division I-II race.

Tony Howkins placed second to lead Walsh Jesuit to the team title. Grove City’s Jacob Kildoo (17:09.51) was first.

On the girls side, Lowellville senior Monica Ciarniello (20:43.48) placed second in the Div. III race and McDonald’s Sarah Jones was third to lead the Blue Devils to a runner-up finish.

Julia Pusateri (20:30.17) won the race to lead St. Thomas Aquinas to the team title.

Brookfield’s Angie Kirila was fourth and East Palestine’s Leighann Kelvington fifth.

Federal League

CANTON — Boardman senior Brandon Pasvanis finished 13th to lead the Spartans to a sixth-place finish at the Federal League championships at GlenOak High School.

Fitch senior Kyle Jones was 23rd as the Falcons placed seventh in the eight-team league.

GlenOak senior Christian Jones won the individual title and Hoover won the team crown.

On the girls side, Hoover senior Allison Peare won the individual title to lead the Vikings to team honors.

In Div. I-II, Salem’s Mallory Maher and Gabby Shivers finished 14th and 15th, respectively, to help the Quakers place third.

Beaumont’s Rachel Slingluff (20:11.45) won the race and Magnificat was the team champion.
