Area tennis players make it only as far as districts
Vindicator staff report
It was a rough day for area high school tennis players.
Boardman senior Carolyn Jesko and Canfield’s doubles team of Gabrielle Brant and Paige Zwicker both fell in their Division I consolation semifinal matches at Saturday’s district tennis tournament at Oberlin College.
In Division II competition in Canton, Warren JFK’s Chelsea Ross and Mooney’s doubles team of Jaclyn DiDomenico and Jordan Stefko also fell in the consolation semifinals.
The results mean no area players will be advancing to next week’s state competition.
Jesko, who was a state doubles qualifier last year with her older sister Ann, lost to Westlak’s Lauren Golick 6-3, 6-4.
Stephanie Hollis of Magnificat was the district champion.
Brant and Zwicker fell to Magnificat’s doubles team of Maria Feddrix and Hannah Shiekh 6-4, 6-3. Natalie Robson and Brittany Miller of Revere were the district champs.
Ross fell to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Taylor Wedlake 6-3, 6-4. Hathaway Brown’s Cameron Dorsey was the district champ.
DiDomenico and Stefko fell to Bay Village Bay’s Sarah Chen and Christina Kander 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Walsh Jesuit’s Nancy Joyce and Cristin Reed were the distric champs.
The top five qualifiers in singles and doubles advance to next weekend’s state tournament in Columbus.
