Pittsburgh couple arrested after boy’s burning

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh couple have been arrested on child endangerment charges after their 2-year-old son was burned by a falling space heater.

Police Sgt. Richard Begenwald say the “deplorable conditions” inside the home, which had no working furnace, contributed to the charges although it appears the heater falling on the boy was an accident.

The boy’s parents, 34-year-old Carl Broerman, and 23-year-old Jessica Burrell, have been jailed on charges of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say the heater, attached to a natural gas line, fell off a wooden stand Thursday evening onto the boy. He was in serious condition at UPMC Mercy hospital.

Broerman says he and the boy’s mother immediately sought medical attention and did nothing wrong.
