Vanful of bank checks stolen from parking lot

WARREN — A South Euclid man left a van full of bank checks unlocked and running while he went into the Chase Bank office at the corner of Market Street and Park Avenue.

Gatonye G. Humphrey, 53, who works for Priority Mail of Cleveland, told Warren police that he left the 2002 Dodge Caravan running on South Park Avenue alongside the bank while he went inside to pick up the checks from the bank at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

When he returned with the bank’s checks, the van, containing checks he had previously picked up, was gone.

Police later recovered the van on Olive Street Northeast. Inside were about seven cloth bags containing a large number of checks valued at several thousand dollars, police said.

Police don’t know whether any checks were missing, said Sgt. Jeff Cole of the Warren Police Department.

Police cited Humphrey for leaving keys inside of the vehicle, a misdemeanor.
