McKinley girls gobble up Canfield by 45 in opener

CANFIELD — Ameryst Alston scored 26 points Saturday to lead the Canton McKinley High girls basketball team to a 90-45 victory over Canfield.

Sydnee Penn and Gabby Kendall had 15 apiece and Laneisha Lenner added 10 points as McKinley dominated the opener for both teams.

Canfield fell behind after one quarter, 19-6, then, despite scoring 17 points in the second period, struggled to catch up. The Cardinals registered 11 points in each of the second-half quarters.

Kaitlin Kaleel had a team-high 12 points for Canfield, which was out-shot from the field, 38-14. McKinley was also proficient at the foul line where the Bulldogs cashed in 11 of 14 attempts compared to 17 of 25 made by Canfield.

East 52, Alliance 43

ALLIANCE — Briana Dawson had 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Bethany Hines had 17 points for East (1-0).

Chelsea Bennett had seven of East’s 20 steals.

Ziara Dixon had 13 points for Alliance, which had 10 steals.

Reshayla Taylor had 11 of East’s 39 rebounds, while Alliance’s Carmella Gattis also grabbed 11 rebounds. The Aviators had 27 rebounds and committed 36 turnovers to East’s 22 turnovers.

Akron Hoban 66, Ursuline 49

AKRON — Jessica Gironda poured in 28 points while Krissy Sokol added 17 with 12 rebounds to spark Akron Hoban (1-0). which was helped by a 23-for-37 showing at the foul line.

Emily Orsini chipped in with 12 points.

Courtney Powell hit 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Ursuline (0-1), while Aurielle Irizzary contributed nine points and Shamia Harrison eight.

United 46,

Cardinal Mooney 44 OT

HANOVERTON — Rachel Sell and Ruth Prosko had a free throw apiece in the three-minute overtime to seal the victory.

Mooney had an 11-6 lead after one quarter, before United outscored the Cardinals, 21-11, in the second quarter. Mooney senior Dominique Zordich hit a 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining to send the game into the extra session, 44-44.

Prosko, a sophomore, had 13 points and senior Hillary Hoppel added 11 for the Golden Eagles.

Junior guard Kelly Martino had a team-high 14 points for Mooney.

Champion 53, Liberty 27

LIBERTY — Sophomore Haley McAllister had 16 points, while sophomore Paige Loychik had 10 points, five steals and five assists for the winners.

McAllister and Lindsay Swipas, also a sophomore, had eight rebounds apiece for the Golden Flashes, who managed 26 rebounds.

Shane Thomas had nine points for Liberty, which trailed at halftime, 39-10.

Columbiana 52,

Heartland Christian 20

COLUMBIANA — Senior Katie Witmer had 13 points, six steals and five assists, while junior Hayley Goist had 13 points and six steals for the Clippers.

Also for the winners, Irene Coy had 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Hockey

NDCL 5, Mooney/Ursuline 1

BOARDMAN — Notre Dame Cathedral Latin took home the 2009 Canfield Hockey Thanksgiving tournament with a 5-1 championship win over Mooney/Ursuline. NDCL goaltender Matt Douglas stopped 38 of 39 shots in the victory. Correy Timmings tallied for M/U assisted by Vince Fornes. Canfield finished third with a win over Cuyahoga Valley Christain Academy 3-2 in the consolation game. Roger Geiser was the winning netminder for the Cards with 47 saves. Scott Sittig, Scott Schilling and Joe Geiser scored for Canfield.
