Penguins lose by 9 to La.-Monroe

EL PASO, Texas — Brandi Brown recorded a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Bojana Dimitrov led Youngstown State with 27 points, but the Penguins came up short against Louisiana-Monroe, 76-67, on Friday in the semifinals of the UTEP Thanksgiving Classic.

The Penguins (0-5) will play Weber State (2-2) today at 7:30 p.m. in the consolation game.

Louisiana-Monroe (4-1) will play host UTEP (3-2) in the championship game.

UTEP defeated Weber State 70-58 in Friday’s other semifinal game.

The Penguins shot 37 percent (26 of 70) from the field, including 7 of 19 on 3-pointers, and held a 50-49 edge in rebounds.

The Warhawks were 26 of 72 from the field (36 percent) but held a big advantage at the free throw line.

Louisiana-Monroe was 18 for 23 at the foul line, while Youngstown State made only 8 of 17.

Priscilla Mbiandja led the Warhawks with 25 points and 11 rebounds. She was 12 of 14 at the foul line. Mbiandja’s 25 points were a career high, and 18 of them came in the second half.

YSU trailed 36-31 at halftime.
