Audobon meeting

CANFIELD — The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley will meet Tuesday at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46.

There will be a social time at 6:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 7.

Jim Kerr, curator of the Wildlife Center at Beaver Creek State Park in Columbiana County, will present a program on “Marsh Critters.” Participants can learn about the birds and animals that live in local wetlands.

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call the society’s voice mail at (888) 846-8851.

Howland leaf pickup

HOWLAND — Leaf pickup will continue through Dec. 18.

Leaves must be placed in biodegradable bags made of heavy paper that are clearly labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable,” and the bags must be placed curbside. Bags of any size are acceptable. “Recyclable” bags are not biodegradable and will not be accepted.

If you do not wish to use biodegradable bags, you will have to use a lawn service to dispose of your leaves.

Scouts’ toiletry drive

AUSTINTOWN — Scouts of Girl Scout Troop 363 from Austintown recently sponsored a toiletry drive to benefit those who live at Sojourner House, Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley and Beatitude House.

Seventy-five bags each were filled with shampoo, a wash cloth, soap, hair ties, a comb, lip balm, a toothbrush and toothpaste. The approximate value of each bag is $10.

The items were collected and donated by the troop or from local businesses. In addition to the bags, extra toothpaste, mouthwash and toothbrushes were donated to shelters.

The troop members are working on earning their silver badge.

Trumbull Mobile Meals

WARREN — Trumbull Mobile Meals has launched Miles and Miles for Meals, a yearlong informational and fund-raising project continuing until November 2010.

It is hoped that Mobile Meals raises $84,000 to benefit the sliding-scale program, which helps pay for home-delivered meals.

The $84,000 was chosen because 84,000 is the number of miles per year Mobile Meals volunteers drive.

To help with the fundraiser by placing a cardboard collection container in a prominent place, call Mobile Meals at (330) 394-2538.
