Phantoms fall in Iowa to end trip on 0-2 run

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — After rallying to tie the game in the third period, the Youngstown Phantoms dropped a 4-2 decision Saturday to the Sioux Falls Musketeers.

Friday, the Phantoms lost 3-0 to the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Trailing 2-1 with 10 minutes to play, the Phantoms tied the game when Luke Eibler scored on assists from Brian Dowd and Brett Gensler. The goal was scored with 7:41 to go in the third period.

About three minutes later, the Musketeers regained the lead when Billy Latta scored on an assist from Stephan Vigier. Latta’s goal came with 4:39 to play.

The Musketeers iced the game with 51 seconds remaining when Darik Angeli scored an empty-net goal.

The Musketeers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period before the Phantoms rallied.

Matt Paape’s power-play goal was set up by Adam Schmidt and Latta about six minutes into the second period. Less than a minute later, the lead was 2-0 when Vigier scored.

Late in the period, Dowd scored to slice the lead to 2-1, Tom Serratore assisted.

Matt Mahalak stopped 31 shots for the Phantoms. Musketeers netminder Willie Yanakeff stopped 17 shots for the win.

The Phantoms’s next games will be on Friday and Saturday at the Covelli Centre against the Lincoln Stars.
