DeCarlo passes state bar

Jonathan David DeCarlo, formerly of Poland, recently passed the Maryland state bar examination. He will work as a prosecuting attorney in Maryland.

A 2002 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, DeCarlo earned a bachelor’s degree from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, in 2006.

In May 2009, he earned his master’s degree in environmental law and his juris doctorate from Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vt.

He is the son of Donald DeCarlo and Dr. Cathy Molloy-DeCarlo of Poland.

Appointed to state board

Atty. Kevin P. Murphy, a member at the law firm of Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell Ltd., with offices in Warren and Youngstown, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association.

The 24-member board meets monthly to manage business affairs, set policy and review pending legislation for the 25,000-member association of Ohio lawyers.

Murphy, a Warren resident, represents the association’s District 18, which includes Trumbull, Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. He will serve a three-year term that begins July 1.

Murphy works from HHM’s Warren office and focuses on business and commercial litigation, as well as corporate, insurance defense and workers’ compensation law. He has been with HHM since 1985.

He sits on the boards of Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley, Trumbull Country Club and the Youngstown Feis Society and also is a member of the Kent State University-Trumbull Campus Advisory Board.

STATE PATROL

Lisbon’s top trooper

Trooper Michael Smith of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has been selected 2009 Trooper of the Year at the Lisbon Post.

Smith, 38, formerly of Columbiana, was chosen by fellow officers based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public. He is now in contention for the district and state Trooper of the Year Award.

Smith joined the patrol in 1999 and has served at the Lisbon Post since 2005. His past achievements include the Safe Driving Ribbon and the Health and Fitness Ribbon.

He and his wife, Kristina, live in Leetonia with their daughters, Ariel and Aurora.

Lisbon’s top dispatcher

Dispatcher Shawn Rogers has been selected 2009 Dispatcher of the Year at the Lisbon Dispatch Center.

Rogers, 44, was selected in recognition of outstanding service during this year based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public.

He is now in contention for the state Dispatcher of the Year Award.

He has served at Lisbon and Canfield posts and is originally from Youngstown. He is a graduate of East High School. Rogers and his wife, Eileen, live in Liberty.

Warren’s top trooper

Trooper Donald E. Walker has been selected as the 2009 Warren Post Trooper of the Year.

During his 11-year career with the patrol, Walker has earned the superintendent citation Award Ribbon, Ace Award Ribbon, Health and Physical Fitness Award Ribbon and the Safe Driving Award Ribbon.

Walker is a 1987 graduate of Howland High School, a former member of the Marine Corps and a former canine handler for the patrol. He lives in Atwater with his wife and children.
