Boy injured in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Police investigated a shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy near his home on East Boston Avenue at 6:40 p.m. Friday.

The boy went to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment of a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound that passed through one arm and into his chest, Youngstown police said.

Late Friday, he was in stable condition.

Police don’t know yet where the shooting took place, though officers were checking the area of West Boston Avenue near Hillman Street for evidence.

Attempted robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating the attempted robbery of a delivery driver on the city’s South Side.

According to police, the delivery driver from a Market Street Chinese food restaurant was attempting to make a delivery to a home in the 300 block of East Boston just after 8 p.m. Thursday but noticed the house was vacant. As the driver pulled away from the house, he was confronted by a group of people.

The driver told police he continued to drive away from the group and heard gunshots. A bullet struck the 1997 Toyota the delivery man was driving. No one was injured.

Donations for victims

LIBERTY — The township is “adopting” the family of the double-homicide victims, Wilneice L. Green, 28, and her 13-year-old daughter, Ja-Brajasia, who were killed late Sunday at their residence, 3022 Northgate Drive.

The township is collecting food for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and items may be dropped off at the township administration building, 1315 Churchill-Hubbard Road.

Christmas gifts for girls, 12 years old and 10 months, and boys, 8 and 2 years old, also are being sought.

Monetary donations, which may be made to the Green family account, are being accepted at PNC banks.

Police Capt. Toby A. Meloro said the investigation into the homicides is “progressing,” and police have “interviewed many people.” He said the department continues to pursue leads in the case.

Robbery investigation

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are trying to determine who robbed a city man of cash and merchandise during the attempted sale of stereo equipment.

A 22-year-old North Side man told police he and a 23-year-old friend were attempting to sell stereo equipment from his white Chevrolet Trailblazer on Thursday afternoon when the group of men supposedly buying the equipment pulled guns and demanded he hand over the items and his wallet.

According to police reports, the group of thieves held the men at gunpoint while removing the items from the SUV in the area of Lora Avenue and Ford Avenue. The robbers also went through the victims’ pockets and took wallets, cell phones and keys.

Police have suspects in the robbery, but no arrests have been made.

Christmas auction

NEW SPRINGFIELD – The Veterans of Foreign Wars Triangle Post 2799 has set a Christmas auction for 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at the post home, 3161 E. South Range Road.

Proceeds will be used for the post’s scholarship fund. A $1,000 college scholarship will be given for the first time this year to a Springfield High School student. Members hope to give one every year. Students should check with the school guidance office for more information.

The auction will feature all-new merchandise at a discount, according to Fran Davidson of the scholarship committee. It will include brand-name toys, housewares, electronics, collectibles and more. Food and beverages will be sold, and there will be a bake sale. The public is invited.

Scholarship committee members, in addition to Davidson, are: Bill Zamarilli, Harold Hake, Dave Blower, Lauri Moss and Henry Morchals.

Brick-sale fundraiser

CANFIELD — The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, will soon be winding down its brick- sale fundraiser.

Bricks are being sold for $20 each to raise funds for renovations to the center’s swimming pool. To date, more than $10,000 has been raised for this project, with many purchasing commemorative bricks as gifts for loved ones or memorials for friends and family members.

The sale is set to end Jan. 1.

Failed bank robbery

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Police are investigating a failed robbery at Farmer’s National Bank, 1319 West Main Street, at 2:39 p.m. Friday.

A man about 45 years old entered the bank and showed a teller a note demanding money. He had a hand in his pocket, making the teller believe he was holding a gun, police said. The man fled without getting any money.

The man was wearing jeans and a blue NASCAR baseball cap.
