Ashley Cuba selected to Big East All-Rookie team

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Ashley Cuba, freshman midfielder for the University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team from Cardinal Mooney High and Poland, has been selected to the 2009 Big East All-Rookie team.

Cuba, only the third Pitt player in school history ever to make the Big East All-Rookie Team, led the Panthers in four statistical categories — goals (seven), assists (4), points (18) and game-winning goals (5.

Her five game-winning goals also led the Big East.

Cuba ranked in the Big East’s top 10 throughout the season in goals, goals per game average, points and points per game average.

She ranked as high as 37th for points and 40th for goals nationally by the NCAA.

During the season, Cuba also was-named Big East Rookie of the Week on Sept. 21 scoring a career-high two goals against St. Bonaventure.

Behind Cuba, Pitt tied the school record for most season wins (8-5-5, 3-3-5 Big East) and enjoyed its first winning season in the school’s 14-year history of women’s soccer.

In addition, the Panthers recorded a school-record 10 shutouts, ranked No. 2 in nation in save percentage 0.57, and No. 11 in goals against average (1.64), and achieved their highest national ranking (No. 25).
