Trumbull officials OK $40,000 extra for septic-system replacement

STAFF REPORT

WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners have approved fronting an additional $40,000 to help eight to nine more Trumbull County homeowners replace their septic systems, with 75 percent of the money coming from federal-stimulus funds.

The county’s contribution to the program, which will serve 23 to 24 homeowners in all, will be $99,975, or 25 percent of the $400,000 program.

The property owners will repay the $99,975 to the county over time on their property taxes.

Commissioners originally approved a contribution of $60,300 to assist 15 property owners, but the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio Department of Health announced recently it had money left over and offered an additional $120,000 to Trumbull County. The county originally qualified for $180,000.

Commissioners also signed a letter of support for a senior-citizen housing project being proposed by AHEPA Zeus No. 88 in Warren.

AHEPA has applied to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for help in building housing units on the site of the former McKinley Elementary School at Elm Road and Larchmont Avenue Northeast owned by the Warren City School District.

Commissioners also approved giving an additional $32,017 of the Trumbull County senior-services levy funds to the county’s Office of Elderly Affairs for home-delivered meals and $15,000 to the office for senior-citizen transportation to finish out 2009.
